FINAL DAY OF YDA WEEK: SIX THINGS ABOUT… JENN NKIRU

Over the course of this week we have heard six things about Lenny AbrahamsonSara DunlopMartin Werner and Adam Berg. Now, in the final instalment of the series,co-editor of shots magazine, Danny Edwards speaks to artist and director Jenn Nkiru.

In this 20 minute interview, Jenn discusses her multi-disciplinary approach to filmmaking, her admiration for Steve McQueen’s cinematic vision, and how all you have in the beginning is yourself and your vision.

Nkiru is a Nigerian-British artist and director whose acclaimed 2017 short film, Rebirth is Necessary, won a slew of awards, including the Canal+ Award at the Clermont Ferrand Film Festival and the Best Documentary at the London Independent Film Festival. She has also directed commercials for brands including adidas, Apple, The New York Times and Gucci, and music videos for Neneh Cherry, Kamasi Washington and, for Beyonce, the brilliant video for Brown Skin Girl.

The YDA will be screening the 2022 winning films at 4pm at the Cinema Olympia on Thursday June 23, and tickets for the screening are available here. They are selling quickly so get yours now to avoid disappointment!
